CP, U.S. Silica set frac sand pact

Canadian Pacific and U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc. Friday announced a multi-year agreement for the movement of frac sand from U.S. Silica’s newest mining and processing facility in Sparta, Wis., as Class I railroads continue expanding their services in the energy field.

BNSF unit trains to serve new frac sand facility

U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc. announced Monday that it has formed “an innovative alliance with BNSF Railway to build a new silica sand storage facility in San Antonio, Tex., that will support the rapidly growing oil and gas extraction industry in the Eagle Ford shale.”

Moorman: Putting coal in perspective

There’s no question about the importance of coal to the railroads. It has recently accounted for 44% of U.S. Class I railroad tonnage, 24.1% of carloads, and 24.2% of revenue. A mild winter coupled with abundant and cheap natural gas has led to a sharp decline in coal traffic—it was down 16% in the week ended May 10 and coke was down 9%.

Unlucky 13: Pittsburgh cuts LRT stops

The Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAT) said Monday it will eliminate 13 “little-used” Pittsburgh light rail transit stops to speed up travel times. The move will take place June 25.
