CN to build new terminal for Bakken crude oil producers

CN and Tundra Energy Marketing Ltd., which handles crude oil on behalf of producers in the Williston Basin, including parent company Tundra Oil & Gas Partnership, have signed a memorandum of understanding to construct a crude oil railroad tank car loading terminal near Cromer, Man., to meet the needs of Bakken crude oil producers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Amtrak Downeaster extension begins Nov. 1

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA) said Wednesday the extension of Amtrak Downeaster service to Freeport and Brunswick, Maine, will begin Nov. 1. Tickets for the new service go on sale Oct. 1.

Train accidents down sharply in six months

Train accidents on U. S. railroads in this year’s first six months declined 22.8% to 811 compared with the same period in 2011, according to the Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Safety Analysis. They caused three fatalities, compared with six in the prior-year period, and 33 injuries, down from 101 a year ago.

BNSF touts Bakken field capacity expansion

BNSF Railway said Tuesday it has increased capacity this year to enable the railroad to haul 1 million barrels of oil per day out of the Williston Basin in North Dakota and Montana.

July employment up over year; down from June

U.S. Class I railroads employed 162,006 workers in mid-July, up 1.94% from July 2011, but down 0.71%, or 1,153 workers, from mid-June, according to data released by the Surface Transportation Board.

TSI opens new railcar repair shop

Transportation Services, Inc. (TSI) says it has opened its new railcar repair shop in Chadron, Neb., situated on the Nebraska Northwestern Railroad’s lines, and with interchange access to both BNSF and Canadian Pacific.

L.B. Foster supplies concrete ties for refinery

L.B. Foster Co. on Tuesday announced it has been awarded a contract by RailWorks Track Systems, Inc. to supply 11,000 of its CXT® Concrete Ties for the construction of an unloading facility at the Tesoro oil products refinery in Anacortes, Wash.

CN, Superior Silica Sands set pact

CN said Monday the Class I railroad and Superior Silica Sands have reached a multi-year agreement to move frac sand from a new processing plant now under construction in northern Wisconsin.

Ga. U.S. House rep tours auto plant, rail yard

House Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) joined the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC), NRC member STX Railroad Construction, CSX, and Kia Motor Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) Aug. 9 for a briefing and tour of the KMMG plant and rail yard in West Point, Ga. , NRC says.

Regional Rail acquires Diamondback Signal

Kennett Square, Pa.-based Regional Rail, LLC said Friday it has acquired a majority ownership interest in Diamondback Signal, LLC. The latter specializes in the design, construction, and maintenance of signal installations for railroad/highway crossings, and was formed in January of this year.
