Morningstar names CP’s Harrison 2013 CEO of the Year

Independent investment research provider Morningstar, Inc. has named Canadian Pacific chief executive E. Hunter Harrison as its 2013 CEO of the Year. Morningstar annually recognizes a chief executive “who exhibits exemplary corporate stewardship, demonstrates independent thinking, creates lasting value for shareholders, and has put his or her stamp on an industry.”

Roadmap to oil train safety emerging

On Jan. 10, 2014, three days after a string of tank cars derailed from a CN freight train in rural New Brunswick, clean-up specialists summoned from Louisiana attached charges to three un-breached hulls. Containing butane, the cars were considered too risky either to move, or to leave loaded adjacent to the wreck’s six other tank cars, still burning their consignments of liquid petroleum gas and crude oil.

Keolis lands MBTA regional rail contract

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has awarded Keolis Commuter Services an eight-year, $2.68 billion contract to operate MBTA regional rail passenger service for the Bay State. Two extension options of two years each could ratchet the total value to $4.3 billion.

Norfolk Southern, through participation in the location of 67 new industries and expansion of 25 existing industries along its rail lines in 2013, spurred customer investments of $2.3 billion, creation of 3,100 potential new jobs, and eventual generation of more than 136,000 annual carloads of new rail traffic.

Metro-North president to step down

Howard R. Permut, president of MTA Metro-North Railroad and an original team member of the railroad since its creation in 1983, reportedly will step down from his post by month’s end.

Report: MBTA mulls new operator

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) reportedly is considering replacing Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. (MBCR), its current contract operator of MBTA regional rail service.

New NYC DOT chief: Polly Trottenberg

Polly Trottenberg, familiar to the rail industry in her role as Under Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, will serve as the Transportation Commissioner for New York City’s new mayor, Bill de Blasio, who assumed office Jan. 1, 2014.
