Canadian Pacific Railway has been recognized as a leader for the depth and quality of climate change data it has disclosed to investors and the global marketplace through CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), the international NGO (non-governmental organization) that drives sustainable economies. CP’s status is awarded with a position on the Canada Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) in the 2014 Canada Climate Change Report.

CP cites improvements in grain train performance

Speaking at the Dec. 8, 2014 “Post-Harvest Handling and Transportation for Agricultural Products: Issues and Challenges” conference in Fargo, N.D., hosted by North Dakota State University’s Center for Agriculture Policy and Trade Studies, Canadian Pacific Vice President Marketing and Sales, Bulk John Brooks said the railroad continues to move more grain from North Dakota to key markets domestically and internationally as it invests in its network.

Greenbrier first fiscal quarter orders top 14,000 cars

The Greenbrier Cos. Inc. recently received orders for another 2,700 freight cars, bringing the total number of cars ordered in the company’s first fiscal quarter (September-November 2014) to 14,100 units valued at $1.24 billion. Orders for the quarter include small-cube covered hopper cars for sand and cement transportation, boxcars, doublestack intermodal, units, automobile carrying cars, gondolas, and tank cars, both for crude oil and other commodity types.

Fuel surcharge antitrust litigation takes an interesting twist

In the ongoing, seven-years-and-counting legal battle involving railroads and certain customers who have filed a class-action suit claiming that the railroads engaged in collusion to impose fuel surcharges, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia has ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in a matter involving the credibility of their principal expert witness.

Learner joins Amtrak Chicago panel

Howard Learner, an attorney who serves as president of the Chicago-based Environmental Law and Policy Center, has joined Amtrak’s Chicago Gateway Initiative, a blue ribbon panel of rail and transportation leaders tasked with identifying infrastructure and operational improvements to address Chicago’s rail traffic congestion, which Amtrak says “is causing major delays for Amtrak passengers and freight shipments.”

Canada: Grasping government tightens grip on grain

Canada’s Conservative government extended its takeover of railway grain movements Nov. 29, ordering CN and Canadian Pacific to shift specified quantities of grain each week throughout the winter, or be fined $100,000 per violation.
