Track work on MBTA’s Framingham-Worcester Line set to begin

Track work is set to start on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Framingham-Worcester Line this month, with a goal of replacing 25,000-30,000 railroad ties while work to end the line’s heat-related speed restrictions wraps up, Keolis Commuter Services announced March 23, 2016.

Kitchener-Waterloo LRT making progress

Construction that began in mid-2014 on ION, the premier LRT line for the twin cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, is progressing rapidly, with opening scheduled for fall 2017.

BNSF plans $180 million capex for Illinois in 2016

BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) on March 9, 2016 announced that its 2016 capital expenditure program in Illinois will be about $180 million. The largest components of this year’s capital plan in the state will be for maintenance projects and improvements to BNSF facilities. Maintenance projects include replacing and upgrading rail, rail ties and ballast, which are the main components for the tracks on which BNSF trains operate. This year’s plan in Illinois brings capital investments more in line with forecasted customer freight service demand, the railroad says.

Rep. Joyce joins MAGNET, REMSA on tour of Iron Horse’s Ohio facility

U.S. Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio) on March 9, 2016 joined representatives from Iron Horse Engineering, the Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network (MAGNET), and the Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA) to tour Iron Horse’s manufacturing facility, learn about the burgeoning rail and manufacturing communities in Northeast Ohio, and discuss public policy priorities for the industries. Local manufacturers, railroads, and rail safety groups also joined the group.
