Experts weigh in on LNG

Programs to evaluate LNG (liquefied natural gas) as a locomotive fuel are expanding throughout the rail industry, led by such stakeholders as GE Transportation, Electro-Motive Diesel, BNSF, Union Pacific, CN, Clean Energy Fuels, Chart Industries, Westport Innovations, Waste Management, and many others. At the 2013 GE Transportation/Norfolk Southern Railroad Sustainability Symposium, a panel of industry experts talked about current LNG projects, and the potential of this relatively new alternative to diesel fuel.

NS outlines initiatives on greenhouse gases

Norfolk Southern on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 disclosed the railroad’s business strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and its environmental footprint in a filing with the international not-for-profit CDP, formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project.

MBTA bumps locomotive order to 40 units

MotivePower, a unit of Wabtec Corp., has signed a contract with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to supply 13 additional, next-generation HSP46 passenger locomotives to be delivered in 2014. The locomotives, which will be compliant with EPA Tier 3 and FTA Buy America, are manufactured in Boise, Idaho, with major components supplied by GE Transportation of Erie, Pa.

GE, Australia’s Aurizon sign agreement

GE Transportation’s Optimization Solutions division has signed an agreement to implement an integrated rail network planning and optimization system with Aurizon (formerly Queensland Rail National), Australia’s largest freight rail company.

NOPB Railroad taps GE Transportation

Erie, Pa.-based GE Transportation said Thursday New Orleans Public Belt Railroad has signed an agreement to use GE’s software applications for railroad transportation management and railcar repair and maintenance.

GE Transportation marks good year

GE Transportation’s fourth-quarter results included $252 million in earnings, or “segment profits,” in the fourth quarter, up 11.5% from $226 million in the comparable 2011 quarter.
