Central Oregon & Pacific receives TIGER grant

The U.S. Department of Transportation, through the Federal Railroad Administration, has awarded a $7 million TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant to the State of Oregon to support a $9.4 million project that will rehabilitate and reopen a 296-mile stretch of the Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad (a Genesee & Wyoming property).

“Here’s looking at you, kid,” is a cherished line from the movie Casablanca,but when the looking is through a hidden camera lens in the locker room or even visibly trained on crewmembers inside a locomotive cab, well, you won’t hear the more famous line, “This could be the start of a beautiful friendship.”

AAR marks industry commitment to safety

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) Wednesday recognized the industry’s overall safety achievements by highlighting best safety practices accomplishments at the Railroad Safety Leadership Forum, in Chicago. The focus of the forum was to acknowledge railroad team achievements in personal safety and injury prevention and provide a venue to share best practices.

You two numbskulls have just been awarded Premier Level membership in the “I Know Absolutely Nothing About Railroads But I’ll Shoot My Big, Uneducated Mouth Off About Them Anyway” club. You guys, like Fox News, will twist words and facts (or make them up) and rely on some fairly inane talking heads just to create a story where there really is none. You join fellow passenger rail bashers and purveyors of refried cow pies like the Reason Foundation and the Cato Institute.

Competitive bidding for corridor passenger rail service in play

Among priorities of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee is reauthorization of the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008 (PRIIA), portions of which are a growth hormone for state-subsidized intercity passenger rail corridors that are separate from Amtrak’s long-distance network, Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, and commuter rail operations.

Train operations notch solid safety gains

In a report posted Dec. 31, the Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Safety Analysis described strong safety gains in freight train operations in the first 10 months of 2012.
