Gulf Coast Battle: An Interim Report

The witness phase of the slugout between Amtrak on one side and CSX, Norfolk Southern (NS) and the Port of Mobile on the other, ended May 12 as its 11th day concluded. It ended not with T.S. Eliot’s oft-quoted “whimper” but truly with a bang.

For Novelis, New Alabama Aluminum Mill

Novelis Inc. on May 11 reported it would build a $2.5 billion aluminum recycling, rolling and finishing plant in Bay Minette, Ala., to be served by CSX.

CSX is honoring 65 customers for their commitment to the safe transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat) in 2021.

Conrail Point-No-Point Bridge Replacement Launched

New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne, Jr. (D-N.J.), Chairman of House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials, on May 2 helped launch a replacement project of the Conrail Shared Assets Point-No-Point Bridge with executives from Conrail, Norfolk Southern, CSX, and members of United Steelworkers of America and Heavy and General Laborers Local 472.

CSX CEO Lost Situational Awareness

Whatever was CSX CEO James M. Foote thinking when he testified before the STB’s “Urgent Issues in Freight Rail Service” hearing April 26? His display of disdain for the agency—in particular, White House-nominated and Senate-confirmed STB member Robert A. Primus—was evident in mannerisms and sarcastic responses.

Small-Road Briefs: NSRR, Watco

Encina is planning to build a $1.1 billion manufacturing facility in Point Township, Pa., to be served by North Shore Railroad. Also, the Birmingham-Jefferson County (Ala.) Port Authority and Watco are investing $1.9 billion to boost business at Port Birmingham.

The Berkshire Flyer will operate on weekends through the summer months in 2022 with a similar schedule next year.

Taking Off July 8: Amtrak’s Berkshire Flyer

Amtrak and the Massachusetts and New York State departments of transportation will run the Berkshire Flyer as a seasonal pilot service between New York City and Pittsfield, Mass., beginning July 8.

CSX Restores C30-7 for Kentucky Steam Heritage

CSX’s Huntington, W.Va. locomotive shop has cosmetically restored former Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) General Electric C30-7 No. 7067 for the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation.
