STB: Five Class I’s Revenue Adequate for 2022

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) has found five U.S. Class I railroads to be revenue adequate for 2022: BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Soo Line (the U.S. affiliate of Canadian Pacific), and Union Pacific.

Class I Briefs: CSX, CPKC, NS, UP

CSX contributes to Hurricane Idalia relief. Also, Canadian Pacific Kansas City’s (CPKC) Hockey Tournament raises C$96,600 for Heart Beats Children’s Society; Norfolk Southern (NS) helps create an interactive rail exhibit at the Pullman State Historic Site and Pullman National Historical Park in Chicago; and Union Pacific (UP) seeks residents’ permission for extensive soil testing in the Fifth Ward.

NTSB Issues Preliminary Report on CSX Conductor Trainee Fatality

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary report for the investigation of the Aug. 6 accident involving a CSX conductor trainee fatally injured during a shoving movement at the CSX railroad yard in Cumberland, Md. The agency said future activity will focus on CSX employee training and close clearance identification practices of the standing locomotives.

$4MM EDA Grant to Port of Oswego

The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded the Port of Oswego (located on Lake Ontario, just north of Syracuse, N.Y.) a $4 million grant to improve rail infrastructure and purchase new cargo handling equipment. The funding will provide the Port with essential equipment and railroad infrastructure upgrades, leading to 19 new jobs, increased export capacity and better access to global markets for local businesses, officials noted.

Carl Ice, former President and CEO of BNSF, will be inducted into the Kansas Business Hall of Fame on Oct. 4.

Former President and CEO of BNSF Carl Ice has been named into the Kansas Business Hall of Fame (KBHF). Also, Locomotive Engineer Thomas Demps, Jr., of CSX, has been honored for achieving 50 years of injury-free service; and Ashley N. Shelton has been appointed as the Railway Supply Institute’s (RSI) Senior Director of Government and Public Affairs.
