NS Extends Tentative Agreements to Nine Unions, BNSF to Six

A week after Norfolk Southern (NS) and BNSF separately reported reaching tentative, five-year collective bargaining agreements with four unions, the Class I’s announced forging similar agreements with more: NS with another five unions (for a total of nine) and BNSF with another two (for a total of six).

SC Ports Sets Cargo Volume Records in July

South Carolina (SC) Ports reported that July cargo volumes at the Port of Charleston were up 8% over the prior-year period, and that both inland ports continued to have “stellar cargo growth,” handling a combined 21,013 rail moves in July, up 19% from last year.

Transit Briefs: Amtrak Virginia, Amtrak/NJ Transit, SEPTA, WMATA

Amtrak Virginia begins service to the Newport News Transportation Center. Also, Amtrak and NJ Transit announce a series of actions that both companies will take following a spike of service disruptions in New Jersey and New York Penn Station during May and June; the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) enhances safety measures for the new school year; and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) Board of Directors approves a new four-year contract with Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 689.
