Ottensmeyer. The two are reconfiguring the North American rail landscape by completing, if all goes as planned, what will be the first Class I merger in more than 20 years, and creating North America’s first transnational freight railroad, Canadian Pacific Kansas City, or CPKC.

CPKC Secures Amtrak Support

Amtrak is backing Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern’s proposed combination, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), and CP is committing to support Amtrak’s service expansion in two U.S. regions, the railroads reported on Jan. 6.

‘Safety Integration Plan’ Proposed for CPKC

Canadian Regulator Rules on Grain ‘Entitlements’

In the 2020–2021 crop year, Canadian Pacific and CN collectively moved 52,334,795 metric tons of Western grain, 9.0% more than the volume moved during the previous crop year and the highest volume ever on record. For CN, its record volume comes at a price, as grain is a heavily regulated commodity in Canada, with revenue caps or “entitlements” set by the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), Canada’s equivalent of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board.

USD, Gibson Launch ‘DRUBit by Rail’

The Hardisty Energy Terminal in Alberta has opened a diluent recovery unit, and the DRUbit™ it creates, a proprietary heavy Canadian crude oil specifically designed for rail transportation, is ready to ship, according to the terminal’s 50-50 joint venture of US Development Group (USD) and Gibson Energy.

Transport Canada Awards C$8.7MM in Trade Corridor Grants, Issues Call for Proposals

Transport Canada is tackling transportation bottlenecks with the distribution of C$8.7 million in grants to four projects under the National Trade Corridors Fund, including one that will boost capacity between Canadian Pacific and the Port of Vancouver; the agency is also requesting further supply chain improvement proposals under the same grant program.

KCS Stockholders Back CPKC

Kansas City Southern (KCS) stockholders have approved the railroad’s planned combination with Canadian Pacific (CP), which would form the first U.S.-Mexico-Canada rail network.
