CN Pushing for KCS Line Divestiture

CN has officially asked the Surface Transportation Board (STB) “to condition any approval of a Canadian Pacific-Kansas City Southern merger on the divestiture of the KCS line from Kansas City, Missouri to Springfield and East St. Louis, Illinois (the Kansas City Speedway) to CN, pursuant to the STB’s statutory authority to order ‘the divestiture of parallel tracks’ as a merger condition.”

CP-KCS Merger Proceeding Moves Forward

BNSF and CN last month told the Surface Transportation Board (STB) they may request limited overhead trackage rights and a line divestiture, respectively, due to the proposed merger of Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS).

In September 2021, Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern agreed to combine, forming Canadian Pacific Kansas City, the first U.S.-Mexico-Canada rail network. The Surface Transportation Board on Nov. 23, accepted for consideration their merger application.

Canadian Pacific (CP) President and CEO Keith Creel is calling 2021 a “historic” year for the Class I railroad; during a Jan. 27 earnings report, he highlighted overcoming “significant operating challenges—devastating network outages in B.C. and extreme cold temperatures”—and closing merger partner Kansas City Southern into voting trust.

Canadian Pacific (CP) on Jan. 24 shared via Twitter a video of its fully painted hydrogen fuel cell-powered linehaul freight locomotive (H20EL), which the railroad said has run under its own power.
