LIRR eyes weekend service upgrades

MTA Long Island Rail Road says it will hold a public hearing Aug. 27 on a proposal to restore half-hourly service on its Port Washington Branch on weekends, as well as on a proposal to operate weekend service on the Ronkonkoma Branch between Ronkonkoma and Greenport for approximately 10 additional weekends each year. 

PATH focuses on new Harrison (N.J.) station

Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) officials highlighted the agency’s commitment to a new PATH station in Harrison, N.J., on Aug. 16, emphasizing the station’s growing transit role within the PATH system. Harrison lies directly east of Newark, N.J., across the Passaic River.

Metro-North West Haven Station debuts

Metro-North Railroad opened its new West Haven, Conn., station to revenue passengers on Sunday, Aug. 18. West Haven Station is located between Milford Station and New Haven on the railroad’s New Haven Line.

More upgrades to 30th Street Station under way

Amtrak will continue work this summer and fall on several upgrades at its historic Philadelphia 30th Street Station on the Northeast Corridor “to improve the passenger experience, tend to the long-term infrastructure needs of the 80-year-old building, and improve pedestrian mobility in and around the facility.” The projects represent about a $35 million investment.

NJT’s Frank Bookstaver: From steam to state-of-the-art

In his 65-year railroading career, New Jersey Transit’s Frank Bookstaver has seen and worked through more changes in the industry than most railroaders would care to admit—and he’s proud of it. Bookstaver, 85, retired July 6 as NJ Transit’s Assistant Chief Dispatcher at the agency’s ROC (Rail Operations Center). NJT honored him on Wednesday, Aug. 14, with a special ceremony during the agency’s August Board of Directors meeting.

Three found guilty in LIRR disability fraud case

Three people have been convicted of disability fraud, enabling hundreds of Long Island Rail Road retirees to garner additional funds through the federal Railroad Retirement Board illegally over several years.

Bombardier Transportation aids parent’s 2Q

Bombardier Inc. reported Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, that adjusted net income for the company’s second quarter was US$158 million, or nine U.S. cents per share, in line with Wall Street consensus estimates, but down about 5% from earnings of US$167 million in the second quarter of 2012.

New appointments at MCBR

Boston’s Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company (MBCR) has appointed John Hogan as the company’s Chief Transportation Officer, and William (Bill) Gilbert as Director of Quality.

MTA lands insurance protection for storms

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced July 31, 2013 that it has secured $200 million of insurance protection to help “pay for future repairs for damage to its infrastructure, in the event of a storm featuring destructive storm surges similar to those experienced during Superstorm Sandy.”
