Bombardier gets TransLink contract

Bombardier Transportation said Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 it has signed a contract to provide train operations for TransLink’s West Coast Express regional rail system in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia.

LIRR taps Ansaldo STS for signal project

Ansaldo STS said Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 it has been awarded a $20.5 million signaling contract to provide MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) an upgraded 45-mile segment of right-of-way between Speonk and Montauk, N.Y., the easternmost portion of LIRR’s Montauk Branch, located in Suffolk County.

SMART gets more funds, adds station to line

Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) said Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has approved $16.7 million in funds to extend passenger rail service to the site of SMART’s Operations & Maintenance Facility (OMF) near the Sonoma County Airport in California.

NCTD notes work schedule for COASTER route

California’s North County Transit District (NCTD) on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 specified track work dates for its Coastal Rail Line, used by its COASTER regional rail service, and part of the LOSSAN rail line linking San Diego and Los Angeles, which includes Amtrak service.

NJT completes mobile ticketing rollout

New Jersey Transit has completed systemwide rollout of its mobile rail ticketing, MyTix, expanded it to the Northeast Corridor and Atlantic City Rail Line. MyTix enables customers to purchase and display rail one-way tickets, weekly passes, and monthly passes for travel to and from all 165 NJT rail stations using their smartphones.

Sound Transit taps Wabtec for PTC

Wilmerding, Pa.-based Wabtec Corp. said Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 it has signed a $34 million contract with Seattle’s Sound Transit to design, install, test, and commission a Positive Train Control (PTC) system on the agency’s regional rail line.

FRA diving deeper into Metro-North

The Federal Railroad Administration will launch a 60-day comprehensive safety assessment of MTA Metro-North Railroad in response to the December 1st crash that killed four and injured 63. Operation Deep Dive, beginning Dec. 16, 2013, “will exhaustively review Metro-North’s compliance with federal regulations, its procedures and practices, and its safety culture,” FRA said.
