RailComm has successfully commissioned a Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) system for the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s diesel multiple-unit (DMU) rail service in Austin, Tex. The Track Warrant Control portion of the system was launched just 32 days from the signed Notice to Proceed.

Google Transit adds five Amtrak routes for trip planning

Five Amtrak routes have been added to Google Transit, Google’s public transportation trip planning function, for trip planning, Amtrak and Google have announced. The routes include: Empire Service (New York-Albany-Buffalo-Niagara Falls, N.Y.); Ethan Allen Express (New York-Albany-Rutland, Vt.); Hiawatha Service trains (Chicago – Milwaukee); Pacific Surfliner Service (San Diego-Los Angeles-Santa Barbara-San Luis Obispo, Calif.); and San Joaquin service (Oakland-Sacramento-Fresno-Bakersfield, Calif.).

GE Transportation wins $60 million Trenitalia contract

Italy’s Trenitalia has awarded a contract to GE Transportation worth an estimated $60 million for the design, supply, and installation of 400 onboard SSC (Sistema di Supporto alla Condotta) train-protection systems for passenger and freight diesel locomotives. Trenitalia is the operating company of Italian State Railways.

RailComm, Inc. has been selected to provide a wireless remote control derail system at Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad’s RIP Track Facility. A customized Local Control Panel located within the shop will provide wireless remote control to the derails.

Signal engineers meeting at RSSI Expo

On May 18, 2009, the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers-North American Section (IRSE-NAS) will hold its Annual General Meeting at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn., in conjunction with the Railway Systems Suppliers, Inc. (RSSI) 2009 Exposition.

ARINC Inc. awarded LIRR control center contract

Annapolis, Md.-based ARINC Inc. will design and produce a supervisory control system and communications systems for the Long Island Rail Road’s Harold Interlocking Complex in Long Island City, N.Y.  Harold is among the busiest such complexes in the U.S., handling LIRR, New Jersey Transit, and Amtrak train movements as well as some freight activity.

Southwest Signal Engineering Co. renames itself Xorail

Southwest Signal Engineering Co. announced Monday that it has changed its corporate name to Xorail Inc. (pronounced “Zo-rail”). The move complements the company’s actions last September, when the provider of signal and communications services to the railroad industry and other sectors formed a separate construction subsidiary, called Xorail Construction Services, which specializes in construction services for railroads.

MTA L Line trains go to full CBTC

New York City’s Canarsie L line became the first in the system Tuesday to operate trains under full communications-based train control (CBTC) with ATO (automatic train operation), as trains began their Brooklyn/Manhattan route with motormen aboard in a supervisory capacity. ATO operations initially will be limited to off-peak service, with rush-hour operation to be phased in.
