Erie, Pa.-based GE Transportation said it had completed its acquisition of software provider RMI from The Carlyle Group. GE said late Tuesday the acquisition significantly expands its Software and Optimization Solutions business to serve railroad customers worldwide. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Ansaldo STS said Wednesday that as part of its ongoing re-organization, it had named Thomas P. Lawton president and CEO of Ansaldo STS USA, succeeding Dr. Alan E. Calegari.
Bombardier Transportation on Monday said it has won a contract for propulsion and control equipment in India from Mumbai Railway Vikas Corp. (MRVC) in India. MRVC is a joint venture between the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra. On Thanksgiving Day, Bombardier announced its readiness to enable the first mixed European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 and conventional signaling operation, on the line between Amsterdam and Utrecht in The Netherlands.
Sophisticated data collection methods, along with high-tech systems to read and interpret the data, help railroads maximize their assets. Railroads are both asset-intensive and capital intensive. Knowing where and in what conditions those assets are, from rolling stock to sticks of rail or stacks of ties, is a big job, but new systems help with that immense task to help plan short- and long-term operations and maintenance.
