No injuries in CN Alberta train derailment

Thirteen cars on a CN train moving oil and propane through Alberta have derailed, with one car exploding and others nearby catching fire last Saturday, with a “controlled burn” still in effect Monday morning, Oct. 21, 2013, to limit the threat. No injuries had been reported Monday, and none were anticipated.

Experts weigh in on LNG

Potash resilient after consortium break-up

One of railroading’s least-recognized commodities found itself in the global spotlight this summer. On July 30, Russian potash producer Uralkali announced it was severing ties to the Belarusian Potash Company, a joint marketing venture with rival producer Belaruskali. Uralkali’s exit was in response to Belaruskali making independent sales of potash to China.

CN accelerates frac sand branch upgrade

CN is accelerating work on a $33 million upgrade of its Whitehall Subdivision in Wisconsin to increase carloading capacity and train velocity for the growing frac sand supply chains of Badger Mining Corp., Preferred Sands of Wisconsin LLC, Atlas Resin Proppants LLC, and Taylor Frac LLC.

CN to build new terminal for Bakken crude oil producers

CN and Tundra Energy Marketing Ltd., which handles crude oil on behalf of producers in the Williston Basin, including parent company Tundra Oil & Gas Partnership, have signed a memorandum of understanding to construct a crude oil railroad tank car loading terminal near Cromer, Man., to meet the needs of Bakken crude oil producers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
