PHL to Test Progress Rail EMD® Joule

Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, has teamed with Anacostia Rail Holdings subsidiary Pacific Harbor Line (PHL) to test its new EMD® Joule battery electric locomotive in the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, Calif., during the second half of 2021.

Working with the Rail Division of parent company Caterpillar Inc., Progress Rail/Electro-Motive Diesel is developing two LNG (liquefied natural gas) systems for the EMD 710 Series engine: Dynamic Gas Blending™ (DGB™) and Direct Injected Gas (DIG). “These technologies will allow our customers to utilize natural gas, while maintaining the leading performance and reliability of the EMD 710 engine,” the company says.
