Union Pacific’s (UP) Chicago Service Unit celebrates a world-class safety achievement. Lac-Mégantic Rail Bypass Project Advances

More than 12 years after the crude oil train wreck at Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, that claimed 47 lives and led to new tank car regulations in Canada and the U.S., the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has now received the official application to build a 7.75-mile (12.5-km) rail bypass around the village. According to the government of Canada, this allows the project to move into the assessment phase.

CTA Sets CN, CPKC 2025-2026 VRCPIs

The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has set its determination of the Volume-Related Composite Price Index (VRCPI) for CN at 1.9734 and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) at 1.9349 for the 2025-2026 crop year beginning Aug. 1. This is an increase in the VRCPI over the prior crop year of 1.72% for CN and 3.11% for CPKC.

Canadian Regulator Announces VRCPIs for Crop Year 2023-24

For the 2023-24 crop year beginning Aug. 1, the Volume-Related Composite Price Index (VRCPI) for CN and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) will be 1.8295 and 1.7616, respectively—both up from the current crop year, according to the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), Canada’s equivalent of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board.
