STB Sets Public Hearing on CPKC Merger

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) will hold a public hearing this September on the proposed merger of Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KSC), which seeks to create North America’s first transnational freight railroad, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC).

Canada: Grassroots Advocacy for Ag By Rail

Two Canadian agricultural groups, Pulse Canada and the Western Grain Elevator Association, have launched a campaign called “Canada’s Ready,” described as a grassroots public awareness campaign to “show Canadians and the world that our farmers, processors and exporters are ready to step up and deliver,” and “to ensure there are no weak links in Canada’s agriculture supply chain,” the most important segment of which is railroads.

KCSM Concession Exclusivity Extended Until 2037; Bypass Under Way (UPDATED)

The Mexican Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) has agreed to extend exclusivity rights granted to Kansas City Southern de México, S.A. de C.V. (KCSM), a Kansas City Southern (KCS) affiliate, until 2037, in exchange for new investment in the Celaya-NBA Line Railway Bypass and other infrastructure, KCS and KCSM reported on July 20.

Transport Canada Invests in Saskatchewan

Canada’s supply chain is still feeling the impacts of the pandemic, and the Government of Canada says it “is committed to addressing this by strengthening Canada’s supply chains and trade corridors, which will grow the economy and mitigate global inflation.”

Amtrak to STB: Deny CN’s Responsive Application

Amtrak is calling on the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to deny CN’s conditions to the Canadian Pacific-Kansas City Southern merger because they do “not satisfy the Board’s ‘operationally feasible’ requirement” and “would harm the public interest by adversely affecting the provision of passenger rail service. …”

According to the Cowen and Company Rail Equipment Survey for 2Q22, it appears that hoppers and gondolas saw demand improvement relative to 1Q22. Containers and centerbeams declined relative to 1Q22.

CP Joins United Nations Global Compact
