Toronto LRT operations plan is clarified

Toronto Transit Commission officials and others Wednesday announced that TTC, not a private company, will operate the four new light rail transit additions planned for Canada’s largest city, though a private-sector company will maintain the infrastructure once it is in place.

U.S. freight carload traffic still struggles; intermodal up

U.S. freight carload traffic declined 4.1% for the week ending Sept. 22, 2012, measured against the comparable week in 2011, the Association of American Railroads reported Thursday. U.S. intermodal volume sustained its winning streak, though in relatively modest fashion, up 0.7% for the week compared with a year ago.

Intermodal again powers U.S. freight mix

U.S. freight carload traffic for the week ending Sept. 15 lagged behind the comparable week in 2011, down 2.9%, continuing a yearlong trend, the Association of American Railroads reported Thursday. Counterbalancing that was the continued strength of U.S. intermodal volume for the week, up 3.9% compared with the same week last year.

Wabtec to repower Metrolinx locomotives

Wabtec Corp. Tuesday said its MotivePower subsidiary has signed a $45 million contract with regional transportation authority Metrolinx to repower 11 locomotives with new engines and propulsion systems that meet significantly higher environmental standards. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2014, Wabtec said.
