Caltrain’s third and fourth new Stadler-built KISS EMUs (electric multiple unit) arrive in San Jose, Calif. Caltrain’s first new Stadler-built KISS EMU (electric multiple unit) has undergone clearance testing in Northern California. Also, CapMetro in Austin, Tex., held a groundbreaking ceremony for McKalla Station, which will be built on the MetroRail Red Line as part of Project Connect; Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) awarded a construction contract for the Codman Yard Expansion and Improvements project; the Province of British Columbia is advancing the Surrey Langley SkyTrain project; and Santa Clara Valley (Calif.) Transportation Authority (VTA) will debut Neighborhood Donation Recycling Stations at four stations this summer.

Within the TIRCP is a $900 million minimum set-aside for capital projects such as the Caltrain Electrification Project, scheduled to be completed by 2024.

CHSRA Issues Final EIR/EIS for Northern California Project

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has released for Board approval the Final Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (Final EIR/EIS) for the San Francisco to San Jose project section in Northern California.

Caltrain’s Board of Directors has approved its operating and capital budgets for FY 2023. Also, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) is seeking feedback on seven East-West Transit Corridor study alternatives; Toronto-area regional transit agency Metrolinx is equipping the Elglinton Crosstown LRT with platform safety systems; and California’s Valley Link rail project has entered the Project Development phase of the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Capital Investment Grants (CIG) Program.

New Caltrain Stadler EMUs bound for California

The first new Stadler trains for Caltrain have departed from Salt Lake City.

“COVID-19 has posed a serious challenge to public transit, especially commuter railroads,” Caltrain Board of Directors Chair Steve Heminger said. Support from the ARP Additional Assistance Grant Program “ensures that, as the Bay Area continues to reopen and riders return to the system, Caltrain will be ready to get them where they need to go.”

Caltrain has been awarded $38.8 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) under the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Additional Assistance Grant Program.
