The California Transportation Commission has voted to release $39.8 million in allocations toward work to advance the Caltrain Modernization Program and prepare the rail corridor, which connects San Francisco with San Jose and Gilroy, for a future “blended” system with California High Speed Rail.
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) on Thursday said that, on behalf of the departments of transportation from Illinois, Michigan, and Missouri, it has issued a Notice of Intent to Award to Sumitomo Corp. of America to design, build, and deliver 130 bilevel passenger railcars for use in regional intercity rail corridors in California and the Midwest.
Caltrain said Monday it will receive $3.2 million in federal Department of Transportation grant funds to install an advanced signal system needed to support modernized Caltrain service and the eventual addition of high speed rail, part of the Golden State’s “blended” approach to HSR.
Caltrans joined BNSF Railway and Amtrak Tuesday in the groundbreaking for a triple-track segment that will add 3.8 miles of track in the Los Angeles area at a cost of $38 million. It is part of a larger, $163 million, 15-mile main line track capacity expansion between the cities of Commerce and Fullerton that will add a hard track along two existing lines.
A final route choice, initially reduced from a smorgasbord of 65 route options to just seven until now, is expected to be selected March 22 for the Los Angeles Streetcar project, after review by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA).
