AAR: Mixed Results for U.S. Rail Traffic

U.S. rail traffic was down slightly for the week ending Nov. 15 and experienced a modest gain through the first 46 weeks of 2025, vs. the same points last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported Nov. 19.

Transit Briefs: SEPTA, Baltimore Red Line, Metrolinx, DART

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) ridership for October 2025 decreases 3% from last year. Also, Baltimore’s Red Line project is slow moving; a new transit hub that will eventually serve Metrolinx’s Eglinton Crosstown is now open in Mount Dennis; and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) launches new ticket vending machines for easier fares.

NS Partners to Support Passenger Rail

In addition to moving freight, Norfolk Southern (NS) has also “played an industry-leading role” in hosting new and existing passenger services, working with passenger rail partners to find solutions that “balance the needs of the company’s freight network and the customers it serves with those of its communities,” the Class I recently reported.

Port of Los Angeles: ‘Solid’ October Volume

The Port of Los Angeles recently reported that it processed 848,431 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in October, “a solid performance given all the trade volatility this year.” After 10 months, the Port efficiently processed 8,655,489 TEUs, 2% more than last year.

NC By Train—North Carolina-supported Amtrak service—celebrates the highest ridership month in its 35-year history. Also, the boards of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) endorse a plan to modernize Metro rail and bus service and strengthen regional transit coordination; Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will soon debut Commuter Rail fare gates at Boston’s South Station; and security cameras will be installed on New Mexico’s Rail Runner Express trains.
