BART taps Bombardier; U.S. content at issue

BART’s Board of Directors Thursday approved an $896 million contract with Bombardier Transportation for 410 cars to replace its aging rapid transit fleet, covering much of BART’s self-prescribed need for 775 cars, replacing its current fleet of 669. But the Board’s decision, and the materials involved in the order, is not without controversy.

Bombardier touts regional rail ERTMS application

Bombardier Transportation said Thursday it has delivered “the world’s first application of a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) regional solution on the Västerdal line in Sweden.”

Bombardier train wins Red Dot Design Award

Bombardier Transportation said Wednesday its Regina X55 intercity train, which entered service with Sweden’s SJ in February, has been awarded the prestigious Red Dot Design Award by Germany’s renowned Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Bombardier Transportation backlog: $33 billion

Bombardier Transportation revenue amounted to US$2.3 billion in the third quarter ended Oct. 31, compared with US$2.2 billion for the same period in the 2010 fiscal year. EBIT totaled US$172 million, compared with US$152 million a year ago, while EBIT margin increased to 74% from 7% last fiscal year. The order backlog totaled US$33 billion on Oct. 31, a level similar to Jan. 31, 2011.

Bombardier marks work in India, Netherlands

Bombardier Transportation on Monday said it has won a contract for propulsion and control equipment in India from Mumbai Railway Vikas Corp. (MRVC) in India. MRVC is a joint venture between the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra. On Thanksgiving Day, Bombardier announced its readiness to enable the first mixed European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 and conventional signaling operation, on the line between Amsterdam and Utrecht in The Netherlands.
