BNSF grabs President’s Award for fifth straight year

BNSF is engaged in service recovery efforts in multiple areas across its network in the northern and central Plains following another major winter storm. Blizzard conditions, with wind gusts to near 70 mph in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota have caused significant train delays since March 14. With the temperature rising, BNSF is now confronting major flooding issues in the region, particularly in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, as multiple subdivisions are currently out of service due to track washouts.
BNSF is experimenting with the process of combining two empty unit grain trains into one and sending the double-length train east out of Auburn, Wash., over Stampede Pass.
Construction is under way on BNSF’s new Logistics Center Hudson, located approximately 25 miles north of Denver International Airport and 30 miles northeast of downtown Denver, and “designed to help customers reach Denver and its surrounding markets via rail-served sites in an easy fashion.” BNSF announced the new center concurrently with a rebranding of its logistics subsidiary, BNSF Logistics LLC.

BNSF Railway will invest $3.57 billion in capital in 2019—a 5% increase from 2018—toward “maintaining and expanding its network with an unwavering focus on operating a safe railroad that meets customers’ demands.”
Investments from customers served by BNSF totaled nearly $3 billion in 2018, a figure that reflects several large investments by customers including Kubota Tractor Corp., WinChill, Dolese Bros. Co., and Dakota Plains. These investments, which BNSF said are expected to generate approximately 1,400 new jobs in local communities, marks the eighth consecutive year that BNSF customers and local economic development organizations have invested more than $1 billion in a calendar year for new or expanded facilities.
BNSF Railway is deploying high-speed onboard cameras capable of recording images, at speeds up to 70 mph, of rail surface defects and other visible flaws like missing bolts, according to a recent report in The Dickinson Press of Bismarck, N.D.
