ARH Explores Rail Shuttle-Inland Port Concept

Chicago-based Anacostia Rail Holdings (ARH) on Jan. 31 released two new reports examining the feasibility and benefits of rail service operating to an inland port for intermodal containers destined within 150 miles

USDOT Awards $4.9B for Mega, INFRA Projects

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is distributing $4.9 billion to 37 nationwide projects through the FY 2023-24 Mega (National Infrastructure Project Assistance) and INFRA (Infrastructure for Rebuilding America) grant programs. Twelve rail-related projects will receive a total of $1.6 billion; the Pier B project at the Port of Long Beach and the Louisiana International Terminal project at the Port of New Orleans are among the winners.

BNSF Announces $3.92B Capital Investment Plan

BNSF Railway (BNSF) on Jan. 24 announced its 2024 capital investment plan of $3.92 billion, which the Class I says will “play a key role in its ability to operate a safe and reliable network while supporting the anticipated needs of its customers.”

As another year begins, BNSF Railway continues to grow. In 2023, we devoted over $700 million to expansion and efficiency projects. From completing a six-mile segment of double track in south-central Kansas along our Southern Transcon route and beginning a multi-year expansion project at our intermodal facility in Stockton, California, BNSF is committed to growth.

That’s the busy shipping season, which starts the day after Thanksgiving and goes through Christmas Eve. PNWR, BLET Ratify Contract

A new on-property agreement has been ratified between 55 Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) members and Genesee & Wyoming’s Portland & Western Railroad (PNWR), a 516-mile Class II that operates throughout Washington and Oregon and interchanges with BNSF (at Vancouver, Wash., and Portland, Ore.) and Union Pacific (at Eugene, Ore., and Portland, Ore.).
