Court moves pricing suit against railroads ahead

Judge Paul L. Friedman of the U. S. District Court for the District of Columbia has granted class certification to a lawsuit in which eight shippers allege that BNSF Railway, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, and CSX Transportation conspired to fix the price of fuel surcharges.

TIGER IV grants offer modest rail money

The federal government Wednesday announced its distribution of TIGER IV (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) discretionary grants. While many “rail-related” projects were identified, some of those deal more with adjacent road access improvements or other intermodal aspects, and not rail-specific projects, the latter of which appear at first glance to have garnered a smaller percentage of the overall package than bestowed in previous TIGER grants.

BNSF unit trains to serve new frac sand facility

U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc. announced Monday that it has formed “an innovative alliance with BNSF Railway to build a new silica sand storage facility in San Antonio, Tex., that will support the rapidly growing oil and gas extraction industry in the Eagle Ford shale.”

Schneider National extends BNSF Railway pact

Green Bay, Wis.-based Schneider National, Inc., on Wednesday said it has signed a new, multiyear agreement with BNSF, under which the Class I railroad will continue to serve as one of Schneider’s primary rail providers.

BNSF 1Q earnings rise despite “traumatized” coal markets

Berkshire Hathaway reported at its annual meeting that first-quarter earnings included $701 million from BNSF Railway compared with $607 million in the year-earlier quarter, as rising shipments of manufactured foods made up for diminished coal haulage.

Triple-track project moves ahead in California

Caltrans joined BNSF Railway and Amtrak Tuesday in the groundbreaking for a triple-track segment that will add 3.8 miles of track in the Los Angeles area at a cost of $38 million. It is part of a larger, $163 million, 15-mile main line track capacity expansion between the cities of Commerce and Fullerton that will add a hard track along two existing lines.

BNSF builds new capacity in Nebraska

BNSF announced Tuesday that it will invest approximately $202 million this year on maintenance and rail capacity improvement and expansion projects in Nebraska.
