AAR: “Demand for rail service should continue to grow”

In reporting weekly U.S. rail traffic as well as volumes for August 2015 and the first eight months of 2015, the Association of American Railroads said that traffic is beginning to show some signs of growth.

AAR reports flat weekly rail traffic

For the week ending August 22, 2015, total U.S. rail traffic was 567,943 carloads and intermodal units, up 0.4% compared with the same week in 2014, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported on August 26, 2015.

Carload traffic dips slightly, intermodal makes modest gains

For the week ending August 15, 2015, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 564, 502 carloads and intermodal units, down 1.7% compared with the same week last year, as carload traffic took a dip and intermodal made slight gains, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported on August 19, 2015.

AAR: CBR leveling off in 2015

In reporting Class I railroad traffic for the week ending Aug. 8, 2015, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) took note of the fact that CBR (crude by rail) shipments in 2015’s second quarter dropped 16%, or 21,189 tank car loads, from third-quarter 2014, the peak quarter for rail crude oil originations. Second-quarter 2015’s 111,068 CBR carloads represented a 1.8% drop, or 2,021 carloads, from this year’s first-quarter.

Senate confirms Dominguez’s role as PHMSA Administrator

The U.S. Senate on August 5, 2015 officially confirmed the appointment of Marie Therese Dominguez as Administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). Dominguez, who began serving as Administrator on June 22, was first nominated by President Barack Obama for the role on May 29.

AAR: Carload traffic drops 6.5% in July

In reporting weekly U.S. rail traffic, as well as volumes for July 2015 and the first seven months of 2015, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) revealed on August 5, 2015 that U.S. carload traffic in July dropped 6.5%, while intermodal saw a gain of 3.5% from July 2014.

AAR: Freight traffic stays flat

For the week ending July 25, 2015, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 557,612 carloads and intermodal units, down 2.5% compared with the same week last year, as only one of 10 commodity groups posted an increase, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported on July 29.

Testifying at a  July 22, 2015 Surface Transportation Board hearing on railroad revenue adequacy, the Association of American Railroads, executives from its member railroads and economic experts urged federal regulators “to beware of upending numerous national economic goals” if they choose to pursue re-instituting revenue caps on freight rail companies.
