AAR: Traffic on the mend; safety continues upward trend

Rail freight traffic continues to recover this year, and the industry posted its safest year on record last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported on March 22. Coal continues to recover at a strong pace.

Rail freight traffic—including coal—registers another gain

The Association of American Railroads (AAR), in reporting U.S. rail traffic for the week ending March 11, 2017, noted that total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 510,638 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.4% compared with the same week last year. Coal, seemingly on the rebound, rose nearly 12%.

Coal on the rise: AAR

In reporting U.S. rail traffic volumes for the week ending Feb. 25, 2017 and the month of February 2017, the Association of American Railroads noted that coal rose 14% and 19.2%, respectively.

Mild rail freight traffic upswing continues
