Week 28: Rail Traffic Ahead of ’20, Down from ’19

Total U.S. weekly rail traffic for the week ending July 17, 2021, reached 513,255 carloads and intermodal units, a 6.6% boost from the prior-year period, according to a July 21 Association of American Railroads (AAR) report.

Week 27: Carloads Up, Intermodal Down

For the week ending July 10, 2021, total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 451,825 carloads and intermodal units, up 0.6% compared with the same week last year, as intermodal losses offset carload gains, the Association of American Railroads reported on July 14.

Rail Traffic Gains Build in 2Q21

U.S. rail volumes in second-quarter 2021 “reflect an economy that is in much better shape than it was but still has room to grow,” AAR Senior Vice President John T. Gray reported on July 7.

Slower Traffic Growth Pattern Continues

For the week ending June 26, 2021, total U.S. rail traffic was 516,167 carloads and intermodal units, increasing 12.4% from the prior-year period, the Association of American Railroads reported on June 30. That included 237,117 carloads (up 17.7% vs. 2020) and 279,050 containers and trailers (up 8.2% vs. 2020).

Is Traffic Recovery Leveling Off?

U.S. rail traffic for the week ending June 19, 2021, came in at 514,112 carloads and intermodal units, rising 12.5% from the same point last year, the Association of American Railroads reported on June 23. That represents 232,144 carloads (up 15.1% vs. 2020) and 281,968 intermodal containers and trailers (up 10.4% vs. 2020).

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation has released a bipartisan five-year surface transportation bill authorizing $78 billion for rail, freight, safety and research programs; it is a companion to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works’ (EPW) recently advanced, and also bipartisan, $303.5 billion Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act of 2021.
