APTA study: Transit ten times safer than autos

The most effective life-saving traffic safety tool for a commuter and a community may be the daily metro transit pass. A new study released by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) shows that a person can reduce his or her chance of being in an accident by more than 90% simply by taking public transit as opposed to commuting by car. This means traveling by public transportation is ten times safer per mile than traveling by auto.

APTA: Melaniphy quits; White named interim head

Michael P. Melaniphy has resigned as President and CEO of the American Public Transportation Association, effective April 29. APTA Vice President-Member Services Richard A. White is Acting President and CEO until a permanent replacement is selected.

DC Streetcar to begin passenger service

After more than a decade of planning, construction and testing, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Leif A. Dormsjo announced Feb. 18, 2016 that the DC Streetcar will open for full passenger service on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m., following a brief ceremony.
