DJ Stadtler Joins Wi-Tronix Board

Longtime rail executive Donald A. (DJ) Stadtler Jr. has joined the Board of Directors at Wi-Tronix, LLC, a Bolingbrook, Ill.-based provider of advanced IoT platforms for the rail industry.

Baltimore Penn Station’s (pictured) last major renovation was completed in 1984 as part of the Northeast Corridor Improvement Project. Pre-pandemic, more than 3 million Amtrak and MARC riders moved through the facility each year. Its redevelopment will better accommodate ridership growth and improve the customer experience, according to Amtrak.

Construction Advancing at Baltimore Penn Station

Amtrak and Penn Station Partners on Feb. 24 reported that scaffolding and fencing are going up around the historic Baltimore (Md.) Penn Station on the Northeast Corridor in advance of essential core and shell improvements, tentatively scheduled to begin this summer.

FRA Hosts South Florida Town Hall on Rail Safety

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) on Feb. 23 held a town hall meeting in Boynton Beach, Fla., to address best practices and strategies for reducing highway/rail grade crossing and trespassing incidents; officials from private-sector passenger rail operator Brightline, Florida East Coast Railway, South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (Tri-Rail), Amtrak and CSX were among those in attendance.

The FRA report found that Amtrak trains experienced more than 1.2 million minutes of delay during the fourth quarter, up 37% from the previous quarter. System-wide, fourth-quarter train-miles were up 33% from the third quarter, coming in at 8,168,324 train-miles, as Amtrak restored service following the pandemic.

FRA Issues Amtrak OTP Report Card

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has released a report measuring the performance and service quality of Amtrak intercity passenger train operations for fourth-quarter 2021 (ending Sept. 30). Among the findings: the Cardinal, Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle were delayed most.

Amtrak told The Mercury in Pennsylvania that it is “starting a planning process with local and state officials, including PennDOT, to study the possibilities of bringing Amtrak passenger trains to Reading, Phoenixville and Pottstown.” (Amtrak/Emily Moser)

Transit Briefs: Amtrak, NYCT

Amtrak is eying express bus service to connect Reading and Pottstown with Philadelphia, Pa., as a precursor to reestablishing passenger rail service. Also, earlier this month, MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) subway ridership surpassed the 3 million mark for three consecutive days, the first time since the Omicron variant was reported in the city on Dec. 17, 2021.
