Short Line Safety Institute fills two senior positions

The Short Line Safety Institute on March 24, 2016 announced the onboarding of two key staff members—Mike Long, Senior Safety and Operations Manager, and Michele Malski, Safety Programs Manager. These two new positions will be instrumental in driving the Institute’s key initiatives forward.

Railway Age is now accepting entries for its annual Short Line/Regional Railroad of the Year competition. Short lines and regionals—and there are more than 500 of them—are invited to submit entries describing outstanding achievement in one or a combination of areas.

SLSI names Executive Director; selects Advisory Board, Board of Directors

The Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI) has selected Ron Hynes as Executive Director to “advance its mission of providing the leadership to enhance the safety culture and safety conformance of short line and regional railroads,” the organization announced on Dec. 14, 2015.

45G Tax Credit extension has majority in both Houses

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) reported on Oct. 30, 2015 that an extension of the Short Line Railroad Rehabilitation Investment Act, more commonly referred to as the 45G Tax Credit, now has 51 Senate sponsors, a majority. The House legislation, H.R. 721, secured a majority of 218 co-sponsors some months ago and currently has 246 sponsors. The credit, in place since 2005, expired on Dec. 31, 2014.

ASLRRA appoints G&W’s David Collins to Executive Committee

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) has appointed David Collins, Senior Vice President of Commercial Support, Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services, Inc. (G&W) to its eleven member Executive Committee, effective July 31, 2015, the association announced August 7.

45G gains ground in Senate

The Senate Finance Committee on July 21, 2015 met to debate S. 637, legislation put forward by Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to extend expiring tax credits, including the Section 45G Short Line Tax Rehabilitation railroad track maintenance credit. 45G has been publically endorsed by 38 Senators who have cosponsored S. 637, a bill by Sens. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) to extend the credit.
