The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) breaks ground on a new AirTrain Newark system at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Also, the Detroit People Mover (DPM) gets the green light for $800,000 to study the modernization of Detroit’s downtown transit line.
Following a month-long public comment period, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) Board of Commissioners on Dec. 12 approved the agency’s $9.4 billion 2025 budget, which includes $4.1 billion in operating expenses, $3.6 billion in capital expenses, and $1.7 billion for debt service and deferred expenses.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) on Nov. 14 announced that it has selected the joint-venture firm of Tutor Perini/O&G to design and build a new 2.5-mile elevated rail structure and three new stations to replace its existing AirTrain Newark on-airport mass transit system.

Also, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) extends its partnership with City of Chicago to provide outreach and assistance to unhoused riders; the village of Westbury, N.Y., completes a rezoning project to promote transit-oriented development near MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR); and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANY/NJ) releases proposed 2024 budget that advances a new PATH fare payment system and the development of a new AirTrain Newark system.
