Second weekly gain in a row for U.S. traffic

For a second straight week – and the third time in the last four weeks – U.S. freight carload traffic gained ground when measured against the comparable period in 2012, complementing the steady weekly advances of U.S. intermodal volume, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.

Intermodal leads U.S. weekly traffic gain

The Association of American Railroads, for the week ending Aug. 10, 2013 reported intermodal volume of 257,969 units, up 6.1% compared with the same week last year, and 288,803 carloads, down 0.2% compared with the 2012 week. Total U.S. rail traffic for the week was 546,772 combined carloads and intermodal units, up 2.7% compared with last year.

The Federal Railroad Administration issued an Emergency Order (EO 28, Notice No. 1, 49 CFR 232.103[n]) and Safety Advisory (2013-06) Friday evening, Aug. 2, 2013, “to help prevent trains operating on main line tracks or sidings from moving unintentionally,” specifically, those hauling certain types of hazardous materials, such as crude oil and ethanol.
