Railcar builder stocks tumble following PHMSA NPRM comment period

Shares of The Greenbrier Companies and Trinity Industries fell 10.2% and 7.7%, respectively, in afternoon trading on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, one day after the deadline for final comments on the U.S. DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on tank cars carrying flammable liquids. Wall Street analysts attributed the stock plunge (which also affected American Railcar Industries, down 5.8%) to investor wariness over an “oil tank car rule fight.”

Record intermodal paces U.S. freight gains

U.S. freight rail traffic for the week ending Sept. 20, 2014 kept rising from levels of a year ago, the Association of American Railroads reported Thursday, Sept. 25. As per the previous week, this most recent week’s intermodal volume set a record high for U.S. railroads, breaking the previous record of the week before, AAR said.

Exemptions expanded in FRA’s final PTC rule

The Federal Railroad Aministration published its final rule concerning Positive Train Control (PTC) systems in the Aug. 22, 2014, Federal Register. The rule, which takes effect Oct. 21, 2014, expands certain exemptions and comes 16 months before the full implementation deadline of Dec. 31, 2015.
