Carload dip continues as intermodal grows

For the week ending July 4, 2015 total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 506,284 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.7% compared with the same week last year, as carload traffic dipped and intermodal grew, the Association of American Railroads reported on July 8.

Growing, yet aging—gradually

In Railinc’s annual review of the North American locomotive fleet, data showed the fleet continued growing in 2014. Locomotives have long service lives, and their average and median ages both increased in 2014.

Rail volume essentially flat through year’s first 24 weeks

North American rail volume on 13 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads for the first 24 weeks of 2015 was 16,950,429 carloads and intermodal units, flat compared with the same period in 2014, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported on June 25, 2015 in its weekly freight traffic summary.

FRA prepared to levy penalties for non-PTC compliance

Positive Train Control (PTC) was again in the spotlight this week, as the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee’s Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials held a hearing June 24 on “The State of Positive Train Control in the United States.”
