Rail freight traffic—including coal—registers another gain

The Association of American Railroads (AAR), in reporting U.S. rail traffic for the week ending March 11, 2017, noted that total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 510,638 carloads and intermodal units, up 4.4% compared with the same week last year. Coal, seemingly on the rebound, rose nearly 12%.

Coal leads weekly rail traffic gains

Coal led all gainers as rail traffic in the U.S. totaled 521,607 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending March 4, up 1.8 percent from the same week in 2016.

In reporting U.S. rail traffic volumes for the week ending Feb. 25, 2017 and the month of February 2017, the Association of American Railroads noted that coal rose 14% and 19.2%, respectively.

Mild rail freight traffic upswing continues

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) on Feb. 15 reported that total U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Feb. 11, 2017 up 2.6% compared with the same week last year. Total U.S. traffic for the first six weeks of 2017 increased 2% over the prior-year period.
