AAR: North American Rail Volume Up in Week 42

Through the first 42 weeks of 2024 (ending Oct. 19), total North American carload and intermodal traffic rose 2.3% from the same point last year, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

North American Rail Volume Up Through Week 41: AAR

Total North American carload and intermodal traffic rose 2.4% through the first 41 weeks of 2024 compared with the prior-year period, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported Oct. 16. The United States, Canada and Mexico all saw gains through the week ending Oct. 12, 2024.

AAR: Week 39 Saw Carloads Down, Intermodal Up

U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Sept. 28, 2024 (Week 39), came in at 507,537 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.6% from the same week last year, based on 227,046 carloads—down 3.5% from 2023—and intermodal volume of 280,491 containers and trailers—up 6.2%, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported Oct. 2.

STB Sets 4Q24 Rail Cost Adjustment Factor

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) has adopted for fourth-quarter 2024 the rail cost adjustment factor (RCAF), which is defined as “an index formulated to represent changes in railroad costs incurred by the nation’s largest railroads over a specified period of time.”

For STB, an Earful on Freight Rail Growth

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) on Sept. 16-17 held a public hearing regarding growth in the freight rail industry. The objective, it said, was to better understand “how the industry has grown and intends to grow.” Railroads and related organizations offered insights and in some cases a dose of skepticism.
