United Streetcar lands DC order
Written by Douglas John BowenClackamas, Ore.-based United Streetcar, LLC, a subsidiary of Oregon Iron Works, Inc., has landed an $8.7 million order from Washington, D.C., for two streetcars to augment the city’s three-car fleet, still to enter revenue service.
The nation’s capital is currently building its H Street/Benning Line in the northeast portion of the city, which is expected to open in 2013, as part of a 37-mile streetcar system.
Though modest in size, the order is the third success for United Streetcar, a manufacturing upstart that also has secured streetcar orders from Portland, Ore., and Tucson, Ariz.
The order can be nullified by the City Council by this Sunday, Dec. 18, but observers say this is unlikely.
