Sacramento LRT addition set for August debut
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefThe Sacramento Regional Transit District said Wednesday its light rail transit Green Line will open in August to revenue service, five months behind schedule.
RTD had planned to open the line in early spring, but postponed the opening after bad weather during March and unanticipated utility conflicts complicated existing plans.
The Green Line will run from downtown Sacramento, through the city’s rail yards, and on Richards Boulevard, adding 1.1 miles and two stations to the California capital city’s LRT system, which opened in 1987. The line cost $44 million and is being built in part ahead of anticipated development; plans call for the line to eventually cross the American River and terminate at Sacramento International Airport.
“Considering the fast-track nature of the project, we’re very pleased with how soon we’re getting this up and running,” said RTD Director of Construction Management Greg Gamble.
