Rail employment continues steady climb
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief Class I railroad employment reached 154,094 in mid-September, up3.12% from September 2009 and 0.91% from August 2010. Train crew employment (transportation, train and engine) continued to set the pace, rising to 61,444, an increase of 8.57% from last year and 1.79% from the prior month.
Maintenance-of-way and structures employment totaled 34,995 in September, down 0.30% from September 29 but up 0.50% from August 2010.
The number of maintenance of equipment and stores employees rose to 34,995, off 0.39% from a year ago nut up 0.61% from August of this year.
Professional and administrative employment, at 13,766, was up 0.41% from last year and down 0.84% from August.
Executives, officials, and staff assistants numbered 9,082 in September down 1.22% year-over-year but up 0.73% from August.
The smallest employment category, transportation (other than train and engine), reached 6,601 in September, up 1.32% from September 2009 and 0,18% from August.
