Siemens lands Hawaiian transit electrification contract

Ansaldo Honolulu Joint Venture has awarded the Rail Electrification business unit of Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector (which also includes Siemens Mobility) a contract to provide the electrification for Honolulu’s under-construction rail rapid transit system.

UP selected for automotive logistics award

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Vehicle Services Americas Inc. (WWL), the primary North American logistics provider for Nissan vehicles, named Union Pacific and its Automotive group its 2011 Provider of the Year. The award evaluates railroad, truck, and short-sea companies to determine the best overall logistics excellence provider in the areas of quality, performance, and customer service.

CIT Rail orders 3,000 tank cars

CIT Group Inc. announced Monday, July 30, that railcar lessor CIT Rail has ordered an additional 3,000 tank cars from multiple manufacturers. Deliveries are to begin in 2014.

STB keeps rate-case fees low

The Surface Transportation Board’s latest update of fees shippers must pay to file cases and pleadings, released Friday, contains some increases but leaves unchanged the current $350 fee charged shippers to file a rate complaint, as well as the current $150 fee to file an expedited small rate case. The board reduced both fees last year.

Fort Worth TEX Rail gets federal grant

Fort Worth Transportation Authority (“the T”) has been granted $4 million by the Federal Transit Administration to continue advancing TEX Rail, a 37-mile regional passenger rail service linking southwestern portions of Fort Worth, and the city’s downtown area, with Grapevine, Tex., and with Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

PATH heads for new ridership record

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey says PATH ridership through the first six months of 2012 was 4% ahead of last year and “on pace to set a new record for the second consecutive year.”

U.S. freight traffic trend reverts to 2012 norm

U.S. freight traffic for the week ending July 21, 2012 resumed its bifurcated trend for the year—a decline in freight carload volume, an increase in intermodal—the Association of American Railroads reported Thursday. U.S. freight carload volume for the week fell 1.9%, measured against the comparable week in 2011. U.S. intermodal volume, however, remained robust, up 6.2% for the week compared with a year ago.

STB seeks to “protect captive shippers”

The Surface Transportation Board Wednesday announced “two initiatives to explore ways to further protect captive shippers from unreasonable rail rates.”

STB said it proposes to reform its rules on how it resolves rate disputes “to ensure that all captive shippers have a meaningful way to challenge rates.” STB also will be “taking steps to consider a proposal submitted by The National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) to increase rail-to-rail competition.”
