AMPS developing “gen-set” locomotive

Alexandria, Ohio-based Alternative Motive Power Systems (AMPS) said Tuesday it has selected 16 Corvus Energy industrial use lithium-ion AT6500-48V batteries for a prototype hybrid switching locomotive being developed by the company, with the help of a New Technology Research and Development (NTRD) grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

July employment up over year; down from June

U.S. Class I railroads employed 162,006 workers in mid-July, up 1.94% from July 2011, but down 0.71%, or 1,153 workers, from mid-June, according to data released by the Surface Transportation Board.

U.S. “mixed weekly traffic” trend resumes

U.S. freight carload traffic for the week ending Aug. 11, 2012 fell 1.2% compared with the same week in 2011, while U.S. intermodal volume rose 3.2% compared with a year ago, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday, as U.S. rail movement for the week resumed a yearlong standard trend.
