AAR: U.S. “mixed traffic” trend rolls on

U.S. freight carload traffic fell 2.3% during the week ending Sept. 8, 2012, measured against the comparable week in 2011, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) said Thursday. U.S. intermodal volume for the week remained strong, as it has throughout 2012, up 3.1% compared with the same week last year.

Sounder Lakewood extension looms

Seattle Sound Transit says it will add Lakewood, Wash., to its regional passenger rail service offerings Monday, Oct. 8, which includes new service at South Tacoma Station. A dedication ceremony is slated for Oct. 6 to herald the event.

Amtrak Downeaster extension begins Nov. 1

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA) said Wednesday the extension of Amtrak Downeaster service to Freeport and Brunswick, Maine, will begin Nov. 1. Tickets for the new service go on sale Oct. 1.

Brookville Equipment to land Dallas streetcar order

Dallas Area Rapid Transit is expected to select Brookville Equipment Corp. to provide two modern streetcars for the proposed Oak Cliff streetcar project. DART’s Board of Directors may make the decision sometime this month. Preliminary approval by a DART oversight committee for a contract totaling about $9.4 million may occur this week.

AMT Mount Royal tunnel upgrade eyed
