Balfour Beatty gets Charlotte streetcar contract

The Charlotte, N.C. City Council Monday awarded a $26.3 million contract to Atlanta-based Balfour Beatty Rail Inc. and Charlotte-based Blythe Development Co. for the city’s first streetcar line of 1.5 miles. The vote was 9-2 in favor, but followed a yearlong dispute over the proposal.

Nebraska Central Railroad has announced the opening of a new rail bridge serving Norfolk, Neb., which will increase the short line’s capacity to move next-generation railcars of 286,000 pounds per car.

Amtrak’s “Train of Hope” enroute to hurricane-stricken New Jersey

Amtrak is bringing a baggage car loaded with relief supplies donated in Slidell, La., to New Jersey communities hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. The aptly named “Train of Hope” is on the northbound Crescent that left New Orleans today (Nov. 9) and is scheduled to arrive in Newark, N.J., on Saturday morning, Nov. 10.

NCTD salutes U.S. military

Southern California’s North County Transit District, which operates the Oceanside-San Diego Coaster commuter rail service, Oceanside-Escondido Sprinter diesel light rail, and Breeze buses, is honoring members of the U.S. military—active duty, veterans, and their dependents—from Nov. 9-12 by providing free transportation “to express the District’s gratitude to our local armed forces for their service to our country and the community.”

United Steelworkers, CP strike five-year agreement

Canadian Pacific and the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1976, which represents approximately 800 clerical and intermodal workers, have entered into a five-year agreement effective Jan. 1, 2013. The current contract was due to expire Dec. 31, 2012.
