MARTA’s Board of Directors authorized a revised contract Monday, May, 13, with URS Energy and Construction, Inc. to design and build the Atlanta Streetcar, with the total price now set at $59 million, up from $52.2 million.

STB sets final rules to aid mediation, arbitration

The Surface Transportation Board announced Monday, May 13, that it has adopted final mediation and arbitration rules that establish a new arbitration program under which shippers and railroads may agree in advance to voluntarily arbitrate certain types of disputes with clearly defined liability limits in matters coming before the agency.

House freight panel to host roundtable with DOT, Army Corps of Engineers

The House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee’s Panel on 21st Century Freight Transportation, chaired by Rep. John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-Tenn.), will hold a roundtable meeting on May 15 to examine what efforts the Department of Transportation and the Army Corps of Engineers have made to coordinate freight transportation policy, and what challenges exist for greater coordination among federal departments and agencies.

UP, GATX host ethanol safety conference



Hands-on safety training was a key feature at Union Pacific’s recent ethanol rail safety conference. Approximately 90 participants representing more than 15 ethanol shippers traveled from a 500-mile radius to participate. Joined by equipment supplier GATX, UP educated customers on the railroad’s safety and security measures.

New investment capital for Iowa Pacific

Iowa Pacific Holdings, LLC announced on May 10 that it has reached a preliminary understanding with two institutional investors for up to $35 million of new capital that will be used to expand working capital availability, retire a Federal Railroad Administration RRIF loan, and fund track improvements. The company expects to close on the financing in the second quarter of 2013.

Will European rail freight reach its potential?

Editor’s note: In terms of rail freight, we’re in excellent shape here in North America. Not so for Europe, which is struggling with how to increase freight traffic on a network primarily configured to support passenger rail operations. As David Briginshaw, Editor-in Chief of International Railway Journal describes in his first blog entry for Railway Age’s sister publication, the problems seem to stem not from operational constraints, but from a lack of political support, and poor service quality. These are problems that we North Americans, with our world-class private freight rail network, identify mostly with passenger rail. Squires advances to NS presidency; five other executive changes under way

On May 10, one day after Norfolk Southern’s annual shareholders meeting in Williamsburg, Va., Chairman, CEO, and President Wick Moorman announced the appointment of James A. Squires as President of the railroad, effective June 1. Squires, 51, currently is Executive Vice President Administration. Moorman will remain as Chairman and CEO.

Sais named EVP Engineering at SYSTRA

SYSTRA has promoted Joseph Sais, P.E., to Executive Vice President, Engineering. In this capacity, Sais will oversee the firm’s U.S.-based Infrastructure, Traction Power, Systems, and Construction Management and Program Management Sectors. He will be based in New York City.

NS’s Moorman to shareholders: The best is yet to come

Kawasaki Rail Car marks 25 years at Yonkers, N.Y., plant

Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. on May 9 joined with New York State officials, elected representatives, and transportation professionals to celebrate 25 years of manufacturing railcars at its Yonkers, N.Y., plant. During the past quarter-century, Kawasaki has produced more than 2,500 railcars at the facility.

AAR: Petroleum gains pace weekly, year-to-date volume increases

The Association of American Railroads has reported an increase in traffic for the week ending May 4, 2013, with total U.S. weekly carloads of 283,916 up 2.8%, compared with the same week last year. Intermodal volume for the week totaled 245,678 units, up 2.8% compared with the same week last year. Total U.S. traffic for the week was 529,594 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.8% compared with the same week last year.

Omnitrax bidding in Romania

The Romanian Government on May 8 received three bids for the sale of a 51% stake in CFR Marfă, the national rail freight operator, and U.S. short line operator Omnitrax is one of them. Omnitrax is bidding against Romania’s two largest independent rail freight operators—Grup Feroviar Român, and Transferoviar Grup, which is part of a consortium with Austrian-based financial investors Donau Finanz.

Three decades after state planners and rail activists envisioned it, New Jersey Transit’s Board of Directors on May 8 officially recommended that the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit system finally be extended into Bergen County—choosing LRT over other options, and ending a decade-plus political struggle over modes.
