Minneapolis mulls streetcar funding plan

A provision in the Minnesota state tax bill could allow “value capture district” designation for the state’s largest city to advance streetcars to augment the Twin Cities growing light rail transit system.

Central Oregon & Pacific receives TIGER grant

The U.S. Department of Transportation, through the Federal Railroad Administration, has awarded a $7 million TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant to the State of Oregon to support a $9.4 million project that will rehabilitate and reopen a 296-mile stretch of the Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad (a Genesee & Wyoming property).

UP: Always expect a train in Chicago

Chicago is the railroad crossroads of the nation, with hundreds of freight and passenger trains rolling on the region’s vast network of lines virtually 24 hours a day. In a public safety campaign “encouraging Chicago pedestrians to cross tracks at only approved railroad crossings,” Union Pacific is launching an “Always Expect a Train” billboard program.

CN accelerates frac sand branch upgrade

CN is accelerating work on a $33 million upgrade of its Whitehall Subdivision in Wisconsin to increase carloading capacity and train velocity for the growing frac sand supply chains of Badger Mining Corp., Preferred Sands of Wisconsin LLC, Atlas Resin Proppants LLC, and Taylor Frac LLC.

Bill Stokes, 1924-2013

Former Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) General Manager B.R. (Bill) Stokes died May 15, at his daughter’s home in Sammamish, Wash. He was 89. Stokes was considered a pioneer in the advancement of public transit.

Sound Transit picks Tacoma Link route

The Sound Transit Board of Directors has selected the North Downtown Central Corridor, also called the E1 Corridor, as the alignment to move ahead with further environmental review for a potential expansion of the Tacoma Link light rail system.

Amtrak to adjust Cascades service

In response to the collapse last week of the Interstate 5 bridge near Mount Vernon, Wash., Amtrak says it plans to add daily round trip between Seattle and Bellingham, Wash., at least for a few weeks, to bolster existing Cascades service north of Seattle.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LACMTA) Board of Directors has adopted a a balanced $5.1 billion Fiscal Year 2013-14 budget that holds fares at current levels. LACMTA’s fiscal year begins July 1.

County interests slam Cincinnati streetcar

In Ohio, two Hamilton County commissioners are actively moving to thwart Cincinnati streetcar development, urging the Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana Regional Council of Governments to withdraw $4 million in funding for the project.

The position is responsible for supervising the construction, repair, preventative maintenance and required FRA testing of all signal equipment in assigned territory. The signal supervisor will review and manage FRA test and inspection reports and provide for the personal safety of team.

U.S. intermodal, carload traffic up, AAR says

U.S. freight traffic scored solid gains during the week ending May 18, 2013, the Association of American Railroads said May 23. U.S. freight carload traffic advanced 1.9% measured against the comparable week in 2012, while U.S. intermodal did even better on a percentage basis, up 3.5%.

LA neighborhood gets desired LRT stop

In Los Angeles, rail advocates in the Crenshaw neighborhood has lobbied to be included in LA Metro’s namesake light rail line, despite concerns expressed that the money required was not available. A local station now appears more likely, though the station’s actual configuration remains unresolved.
