For Italy’s Merano-Malles Line, ERTMS Level 2

Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, on March 30 reported delivering, in partnership with Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige (STA), a technology upgrade to the 37-mile (60 kilometer) Merano–Malles railway line in South Tyrol, Italy.

Cando to Acquire Savage Rail (UPDATED, 3/30)

Cando Rail & Terminals (Cando) on Feb. 23 announced the execution of a definitive agreement to acquire Savage Rail (Savage) in a “mutually beneficial deal that will make Cando North America’s market leader in first and last mile rail operating services and terminal infrastructure, and positions Savage for strategic growth opportunities by refining its business portfolio,” according to the companies.

San Diego MTS: $60.4MM to Advance Modernization Projects

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) on March 27 announced that it has been awarded $60.4 million through the State of California’s competitive Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP) to advance major light rail and electric bus modernization projects. TIRCP, funded by the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, supports transit investments that “reduce emissions, expand mobility options and improve service in disadvantaged communities.”

BNSF Customers Invest More Than $5.3B in 2025

BNSF on March 26 announced that its customers have invested more than $5.3 billion in 2025, completing 117 rail-served projects, the highest number closed in the last six years, according to the Class I.
